# What Moves Night Futures

This guide follows the twelve hours the night session is open in order, taking in which news arrives at which hour and how the price moves in between.

## What gets priced in early in the evening?

When the session opens at 18:00, the first things to reach the price are domestic news released after the regular close and the flow of the European market, which is trading at full tilt by then. The United States regular session has not started yet, so trades are on the sparse side and the price often moves in a narrow band near the reference line.

## When does United States data come out?

United States employment and inflation figures land around 22:30 Korean time, and during daylight saving they come an hour earlier, around 21:30. Around those moments the bars often tighten up all at once and the price steps to a new level. The further the reading lands from what the market had assumed, the wider the step.

## How does the United States session overlap?

The United States regular session opens at 23:30 Korean time and closes at 06:00 the next morning, and during daylight saving both times move an hour earlier. The night session covers that whole stretch, so moves in United States equities, and in semiconductors above all, carry into the KOSPI 200 futures price almost in real time. It is also why trades bunch up around the United States open and close.

## What time does the rate decision come through?

The United States rate decision comes through around 04:00 Korean time, and around 03:00 during daylight saving. On some nights the explanation that follows shakes the price more than the decision itself, so for an hour or so afterwards the bars run dense and the direction can turn several times.

## How do the won and commodities come in?

The won keeps trading in overseas markets through the night, and commodity prices such as oil move a good deal in United States hours as well. The exchange rate and the oil price change what the market assumes about inflation, rates and foreign flows, so they often move on the same night as index futures. A night when the won climbs sharply and the futures price slips, or a night when oil spikes and the futures price wobbles, are the usual examples.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What time does United States data come out?

Employment and inflation figures land around half past ten at night Korean time, and an hour earlier during daylight saving. Around those moments the bars often tighten up and the price steps to a new level.

### If United States stocks rise overnight, do night futures rise too?

They move the same way on many nights, but not always. The exchange rate, moves in semiconductors and domestic news all work separately, and a thin night book can widen or damp the move. The direction can match while the size does not.
