The Korean national-accounts levels KRNGDP, KRGDPDEF, KRPCE, KRGOVCONS, KRFACINV, KRCONINV, KRIPINV, KRINVCHG, KRGNI, and KRSAVRATE are raw quarterly series recorded as reported without any transformation, the compiled magnitudes of the resident economy's output, prices, expenditure, income, and saving. They sit within one integrated system of national accounts, where the gross domestic product measured from the expenditure side equals the sum of final consumption, investment, and net exports, and the same output revalued at current prices divided by its volume defines the implied price deflator, so the level, the components, and the deflator are tied together by construction rather than by estimation.

Within that expenditure decomposition final consumption is exhausted by the household and the general-government components, while gross capital formation splits into the fixed investment embodied in construction, in machinery and equipment, and in intellectual-property products, and into the change in inventories together with the net acquisition of valuables. Government final consumption records the non-market services the public sector provides and consumes on behalf of the community, valued at the cost of producing them because no market price is observed (Stone 1947; Kuznets 1941). Investment in intellectual-property products records the reproducible intangibles such as research and development and software that the accounts treat as produced capital rather than as an intermediate cost (Fabricant 1940; Hill 1988). The change in inventories together with the net acquisition of valuables absorbs the difference between what is produced and what is finally sold, so it is the single expenditure component that takes either sign (Meade and Stone 1941).

Each aggregate is a double-entry social-accounting magnitude in the lineage of national-income measurement (Kuznets 1941), where every transaction is entered once as a use and once as a matching resource under the accounting identities that make the system close (Meade and Stone 1941). The components are read from the integrated production, income, and expenditure accounts (Stone 1966), whose definitional and consistency rules descend from the social-accounting framework (Stone 1947) and whose output concepts follow the measurement of production and real product (Fabricant 1940).

Separating a nominal aggregate into a volume and a price part is an index-number problem, resolved by deflating current-price output with a price index built from the classical index tradition (Fisher 1922; Laspeyres 1871; Paasche 1874) and its superlative refinement (Diewert 1976), so that the deflator approximates a true cost-of-output comparison (Konüs 1939). The real expenditure and income aggregates are the volume counterparts obtained under the same revaluation, and the saving ratio is the share of disposable income that is not consumed.

Because the current account of the resident economy equals national saving less domestic investment, the saving ratio and the investment components are tied by the intertemporal accounting identity linking saving, investment, and the external balance (Obstfeld and Rogoff 1995), and the cumulated positions behind them map into the national balance sheet (Goldsmith, Lipsey, and Mendelson 1963). The aggregates were built to make the fluctuations of output, spending, and income measurable as a business cycle (Burns and Mitchell 1946).

Several of these series are seasonally adjusted at source and are recorded here without further adjustment, while the price deflator and the saving ratio are recorded as reported without seasonal adjustment, so each retains exactly the calendar treatment carried at source.

Methodology

KRED applies no transformation to KRNGDP, KRGDPDEF, KRPCE, KRGOVCONS, KRFACINV, KRCONINV, KRIPINV, KRINVCHG, KRGNI, or KRSAVRATE, neither deflating, re-scaling, smoothing, nor annualizing them, so each published number is the compiled national-accounts figure exactly as measured, a current-price or volume level in billions of won, an index for the deflator, and a percentage share for the saving ratio. Any seasonal adjustment carried by a series is performed at source and reproduced verbatim, not applied by KRED.

The measurement basis is the double-entry system of national accounts, in which every flow is booked simultaneously as a use and a resource so that the accounts balance (Meade and Stone 1941), extending the foundational estimation of national income (Kuznets 1941) within the integrated social-accounting system (Stone 1966; Stone 1947). The reliability bounds on such estimates were formalized alongside the accounts themselves (Stone, Champernowne, and Meade 1942), and the practitioner conventions for sectoring transactors and classifying flows follow the handbook treatment (Dawson 1996).

The split of a current-price aggregate into a volume and a deflator applies index-number theory, under which quantities and prices combine into paired exact indices (Fisher 1922; Diewert 1976), with the elementary aggregation resting on the classical price-index forms (Laspeyres 1871; Paasche 1874; Törnqvist 1936) and the index-consistency requirements of the modern methodology (Balk 1995). The volume aggregates for consumption and investment are obtained by the same revaluation, and the measurement of real product follows the treatment of quantity and price components (Hill 1988).

The expenditure components inherit that treatment without exception, so government final consumption is compiled at the cost of the non-market output it stands for, the intellectual-property-products component is compiled as gross fixed capital formation in reproducible intangibles, and the inventory component is compiled from the change in the physical stock valued so that holding gains are excluded (Stone 1966; Hill 1988; Fabricant 1940). None of these compilations is re-performed here, since the reported volume level is recorded as it stands.

The saving ratio is compiled as the share of gross national disposable income that is saved rather than consumed, so it inherits the definitions of its numerator and denominator from the income and expenditure accounts (Stone 1966) and satisfies the saving-investment identity by construction (Obstfeld and Rogoff 1995). In every case the published figure exists as an accounting-consistent level, ratio, or index rather than a modelled quantity, and the cyclical decomposition it supports is the one the accounts were designed to render measurable (Frisch 1936).

Applications in Economics

The national-accounts levels are among the most-watched macro quantities, because output, its expenditure components, income, and saving jointly trace the state of activity and the intertemporal choices behind it. Real product and its volume components are the raw material of business-cycle measurement (Kuznets 1941; Burns and Mitchell 1946), and the impulse-and-propagation view of fluctuations rests on exactly such aggregates (Frisch 1936).

The expenditure decomposition is informative because its parts behave differently over the cycle. Consumption is the largest and smoothest component and its comovement helps date the cycle (Stock and Watson 1989), while facilities and construction investment are the volatile, forward-looking parts whose turning points lead the aggregate (Mitchell and Burns 1938; Moore 1961). The systematic timing of these components relative to output is the basis of the leading-and-coincident indicator tradition (Zarnowitz 1992).

The remaining components carry their own cyclical signatures. Government final consumption is the least cyclical of the expenditure lines and cushions private demand when it contracts, investment in intellectual-property products accumulates the intangible capacity that sits behind trend growth and moves more slowly than the equipment cycle (Fabricant 1940; Kuznets 1941), and the change in inventories is the most volatile line of all, absorbing the mismatch between production and final sales and accounting for a disproportionate share of quarter-to-quarter movement in the aggregate (Mitchell and Burns 1938; Moore 1961).

The deflator carries the price information that separates nominal from real growth, and its behavior is read against the underlying-inflation concept that strips transitory movements from the trend (Eckstein 1981). Real gross national income differs from real product by the net income from abroad and the trading-gain adjustment, so it measures the purchasing power actually accruing to residents, a distinction that matters when relative prices move.

Read against income, the saving ratio measures the reallocation of purchasing power over time and equals, by the saving-investment identity, the economy's net lending position (Obstfeld and Rogoff 1995), so gross saving and investment carry information beyond the net external flow (Obstfeld 2012). Household consumption and saving respond to income and expectations (Carroll, Fuhrer, and Wilcox 1994; Ludvigson 2004), and the integrated accounts make these balances a direct object of demand analysis (Stone 1966).

Applications in Financial Markets

For market participants the national-accounts levels are a macro overlay for cyclical and cross-asset positioning, because output, spending, income, and saving set the backdrop against which earnings, rates, and risk premia evolve. The business-cycle chronology built from these aggregates is the reference against which turning points are timed (Burns and Mitchell 1946; Zarnowitz 1992), and the composite-indicator tradition distills their comovement into a tradable read on the cycle (Stock and Watson 1989; Moore 1961).

The components matter differently for pricing. The volatile investment aggregates and the forward-looking survey balances lead the cycle, so their turns inform the timing of duration and credit exposure (Mitchell and Burns 1938), a use that descends from the earliest attempts to read the market barometers off activity data (Persons 1923). Consumption and its saving counterpart condition the demand path that drives revenues and the household cash flows behind credit performance (Carroll, Fuhrer, and Wilcox 1994; Ludvigson 2004).

The inventory line is where the gap between production and final sales appears first, so its swings are read as the near-term momentum of activity rather than as a change in its trend, while government final consumption carries the fiscal footprint that sits behind issuance and the demand backdrop, and the intellectual-property-products line marks the intangible capital formation that supports longer-horizon earnings capacity (Burns and Mitchell 1946; Fabricant 1940; Zarnowitz 1992).

The deflator matters because only real growth net of prices maps into real returns, and the transitory-versus-trend split in prices sharpens that mapping (Eckstein 1981). Nominal output and its interest cost anchor the saving-and-investment balance whose yield forgone links to holders' rate sensitivity (Fisher 1930).

The saving ratio and the external balance frame the exposures that currency desks and macroprudential overseers monitor, since a country's net-lending position is the flow counterpart of its external claims (Obstfeld and Rogoff 1995; Lane and Milesi-Ferretti 2001), and rapid swings in saving and credit have repeatedly preceded financial instability in the long-run record (Schularick and Taylor 2012; Jordà, Schularick, and Taylor 2017).

Statistical Tests

KRGOVCONS is Korean real government final consumption expenditure, a seasonally-adjusted-at-source national-accounts volume whose published level is the statistical object, expected to be integrated of order one. The sample is 266 quarterly observations spanning 1960-01 to 2026-04, and the unit-root triplet is fitted on the level with a constant and trend.

The augmented regression of Dickey and Fuller (1979), lag-augmented in the manner of Said and Dickey (1984), fails to reject the unit root with a statistic of −0.259 at p = 0.990, the nonparametric test of Phillips and Perron (1988) concurs with a statistic of 0.712 at p = 1.000, and the stationarity-null test of Kwiatkowski et al. (1992) rejects trend stationarity with a statistic of 0.597 at p < 0.01, so all three procedures agree on a clean I(1) classification. The GLS-detrended escalation of Elliott, Rothenberg, and Stock (1996) is reserved for ambiguous outcomes under the house protocol and is not invoked on this clean reading.

Because the level is I(1), the portmanteau and the break search are computed on the first difference, since a level portmanteau reads the near-unit autocorrelation of the trending level and a level mean-break search spuriously segments it (Perron 1989; Hamilton 2018; Bai and Perron 1998). The portmanteau statistic of Ljung and Box (1978), refining the form of Box and Pierce (1970), rejects the white-noise null on the differenced series with Q = 71.622 at lag 4 and Q = 203.588 at lag 8, both at p = 0.000, and the multiple-break procedure computed by the dynamic-programming algorithm of Bai and Perron (2003) places one break in the mean of the differenced series, at 2001-01.

Because the level is seasonally adjusted at source, the seasonal battery confirms the source adjustment rather than interrogating raw calendar structure. The seasonal-unit-root test of Hylleberg et al. (1990), applied at the quarterly frequencies and later extended by Beaulieu and Miron (1993), rejects unit roots at the seasonal frequencies with a statistic of 221.542 at p = 0.000, and the seasonal dummies are not jointly significant, with F = 0.346 at p = 0.792, so neither stochastic nor deterministic seasonality survives at source. The seasonal-frequency portmanteau returns 203.588 at p = 0.000 on the differenced series, which reflects residual serial dependence at the seasonal lags rather than a seasonal pattern the source adjustment failed to remove. This stationary-seasonality reading is consistent with Canova and Hansen (1995) and with the seasonal-adjustment literature (Ghysels and Osborn 2001).
